June 13, 2014 Sleep - Cricket - Aqua

Selwyn District Aqua Center

Colin giving instruction about cricket
After sleeping in a bit, the afternoon was reserved for learning about cricket and a swim. After the obligatory Hilyer's pie, we headed to the sport's domain. It was a warm and sunny day, no wind, and a perfect pitch for a game of cricket. The squad was split into two teams (Black Kiwis vs. The Great-spotted Kiwis). Cricket - the gentlemen's sport - is a game that can last 5 days. We shortened this a bit, and after learning the basic rules, we started the game.

Erin giving it a go

The bowler pitches the ball down the pitch and tries to hit the wicket; the batsman, guards the wicket and tries to hit the ball into the field and score runs (see real cricket here). Btw, the bowler can hit the ball 360 degrees and chose when to run. No gloves in this game! Basic - I know, but we had a fun few hours.

The crowd goes wild!
After a thrilling game (Black Kiwis 57. The Great-spotted Kiwis 42), we headed to the aqua center. A large swimming arena, lots of families, a lazy river, and even an obstacle course. Right in the middle of a paddock.

Tomorrow we head to the West coast tomorrow to see keas, the beautiful Alps, kiwis, and much more. Nighty night. Dr. H
